How to Measure for the Right Comforter Size

By Vireroom Editorial Team. Updated October 1, 2026.

Choose a comforter by its actual width and length, not the mattress size name alone. Mattress thickness, a topper, and how far you want the bedding to hang all affect the fit.

Measure the bed and your preferred coverage

  1. Measure the mattress width and length with any topper in place.
  2. At each side, measure from the top of the mattress to where you want the comforter edge to finish. This is your preferred side drop.
  3. Check the length separately, allowing for any fold-back at the pillows and the coverage you want at the foot.

Target comforter width = mattress width + twice the side drop. For example, an 80-inch-wide mattress with a 12-inch drop on each side needs about 104 inches of comforter width. This is a planning measurement; the way the bedding drapes can affect the finished look.

Compare with actual comforter measurements

The examples below are in inches and come from confirmed Vireroom product specifications. They are not universal measurements for every design. Check Product Details on the product you choose.

Adult comforter examples

  • Twin and Twin XL: 68 x 88 in in the confirmed bed-in-a-bag range.
  • Full: 82 x 88 in in that range.
  • Queen: 90 x 90 in in many comforter sets.
  • King and California King: 104 x 90 in in many comforter sets.

Kids' comforter sets

  • Twin: 68 x 86 in.
  • Full/Queen: 86 x 86 in.

Check King and California King carefully

A King mattress is wider; a California King is longer and narrower. Some sets offer the same comforter dimensions for both options, so compare coverage rather than assuming the names are interchangeable. If the set includes sheets, check the fitted-sheet dimensions separately.
